Pitching From Thick Rough Many of my tips include a reference to keeping your hands soft and relaxed. But an exception comes to mind. If your ball is sitting down in the rough near the green and you need to hit a lofted pitch shot, it's important to keep your hands more firmly in control of the club (tighter than you normally would). The long grass may grab the club and not only stop it, but also twist it if you're not holding on fairly tightly. Also focus on making sure that your club continues to accelerate through the grass and that the blade maintains its directional orientation as it passes under the ball (take some practice swings in grass that is of a similar thickness to the lie your ball is in to feel how much the club will be affected). Pitching and the entire short game are covered in detail in my book "The Short Game." You can also work on your game with me in person
